Home Grown Spring Onion

I'm in the progress to achieve my dream to have a little spice garden at home. I have very little knowledge and experience in gardening. First, I started to grow mint and parsley back in August this year. The Parsley didn't last long. Within a week, the plant was dried up. On the other hand, the mint plant grows pretty well. I'm neither a green thumb or black thumb. 50-50, I would say? So far, a few batches of home grown mint leaves were harvested to make mint leave omelet, assam laksa and mint leaves soup.

About a week ago, I planted a few shallots into a pot. Now, each shallot blossoms into spring onion. It is so easy to plant it at home and it shoots pretty fast. Furthermore, it requires no special care, except sun light and water to survive. Spring onion doesn't last long in fridge. So, it is a good idea to grow on your own and harvest it anytime you need it.Soon, I'll utilise this fresh home grown spring onion in my culinary, either raw or cooked.

  1. Nice spring onions you got there:)

Actually spring onions can be kept for more than a week.
Usually, I clean them right after I buy them. Snip them into long lengths (just long enough to fit into those "tapau" plastic boxes that is not really airtight). And I leave a bit of roots for the bulbs. This way, my spring onions keep for more than a week. Sometimes, if I got them really fresh, they last 2 weeks in my fridge.

  9. I've always wanted my own herb garden! green onions are such a great one to grow since I always seem to need them and yet never seem to use up a whole bag before they go bad.

  11. Excellent idea to grow spring onion in a pot. I hate buying a big bunch of the stuff and have it go off in the fridge.

  12. wendy, I see. Normally I just rinse and dry it. Then I keep it in a plastic bag. This way, it doesn't last longer than a week.

Priya, haha, it is so easy to grow own spring onion at home. That's why I can grow it successfully.

Swee San, but unlike lemon grass, spring onion just take up very little space. Coriander? No, I haven't try. I don't really like coriander and basil. But, still I can learn how to grow these 2. Can be used decorate my home cooked dishes. :)

  13. Anncoo, thanks. The photos are all taken by hubby. I'm an idiot in photography. The spring onion looks so fragile and thin. Hehe...

Mei Teng, I only know how to grow mint leave and spring onion, so far. :)

ICook4Fun, me too. I love mint leaves and spring onion, but I just don't like the smell of basil leaves and coriander. Does it sounds weird?

  14. Shirley, you just need a few pots and you can start the project.

Choi Yen, may be I should use onion rather than shallot? Then I will get big fat spring onion? Hehe...

Joanne and OohLookBel, same here. I used to waste the left over spring onion.

Jen, I just manage to take care of these easy growing plants. Some of them died. :(

lena, welcome here. Instead of keep it in a container, I keep it in plastic bag. And, it doesn't last longer than a week.

daphne, do you have a garden at your back yard? A lot of residents in Perth grow their own spice and veggies.
