Home Made Makizushi 寿司巻

Hubby and I have been dining out for sushi quite frequent. We will have sushi for dinner almost every Saturday evening. We opt for something light when dining out, and eventually sushi become our favorite food. Also a packet of sushi making set was bought to DIY at home.

After watching some video clips to pick up the basic skills, we hands on to make our own sushi. Hubby helped to cook sushi rice and mix it up with some vinegar. Also, he cling-wrapped the makisu (bamboo roll), as per my instruction, hehe... Then I prepared some other simple ingredients like Japanese cucumber, steamed crab stick filamen, fried egg and steamed sausage. I cut up all the ingredients into strips. Then, I followed the steps like what I learned from the video clips. See my first piece of work? Although it doesn't look perfect, but I'm satisfied with the first trial. That was our simple and yet fulfilling dinner.

To polish up my sushi making skill, I'll practice more to make different variety of sushi and to use other type of fillings. Stay tuned!

My hubby said, it's boring to eat sushi at home cos he can't get variety like that he can get at restaurants. Cos I only use crab stick, cucumber, egg only. Hahaha.
So, he'd prefer me not to make.

Sonia, thanks. Will learn to make more beautiful sushi with appropriate fillings.

New Kid, thanks for your support.

wendy, can get other ingredients from Jusco to make proper sushi. Hubby and I prefer something light.

MeRy, I see. Good to hear that.

Looks perfect! I love sushi too :)

I know, but hoh, with only 2 persons eating, I'm lazy to buy a variety of stuff. Plus, Jusco is in Ipoh (35 mins away), and I usually go at night, I don't want to keep the raw fish til the next day. If I go to Jusco, I think I'll just grab the sushi variety pack, instead of a variety of shashimi to make sushi at home, Hahaha!! But in the end, my hubby will ask me to head to the nearest Jap Restaurant to get his shashimi fix.

At least you can help from your hubby :) ....I have not made sushi for a long time. If I start, means I have to keep on doing it cos I need to buy new set of ingredients: the rice, vinegar, the "tool"...

Ancoo, thanks.

Wendy, hubby and I don't take sashimi, haha...my case is different. Just thought of buying other stuff like tako to make Gunkanmaki. Also, I can learn to make Uramaki. Fun...

petite nyonya, I think that the layer of rice is not so even. There's room for improvement.

Pam, initially I planned to make a batch for our dinner. If it looks ugly then I won't take photo, but it looks quite acceptable, so just capture a photo for memorial. :P

Juliana, it is not so complicated actually. You can watch on some video clips from youtube to see learn the steps up front, before you hands on to make one.

Cooking Gallery, I see, you are one of the sushi lovers. :)

tigerfish, my hubby seldom help up in the kitchen, except this time. You know why? He was so eager to taste it, haha...

Zoe, thanks and welcome to my blog.

Hey, for a first timer, these look very impressive already!! You wouldn't wanna look at my first ones ... LOL! In my house, there are three huge sushi fanatics (i.e. me and my bros)! But as much as I'd like to eat sushi, I try taking it in moderation because of the rice. I'm taking less rice nowadays in terms of my carbo intake. LOL!

Btw, I have to tell you ... I agree that cooking and baking together with your better half/partner is the sweetest ever ... I love those bonding moments and the rewarding experience. So sweet of both of you! =)

pigpigscorner, this is something nice to have at home.

TasteHongKong, ok, stay tuned!

Debs, LOL. As long as you cook other things for him, it's fine, hehe...

Kathryn, too bad. I'm in Penang, Malaysia. :(

noobcook, yes this is my first attempt. I made more with same ingredients on the 2nd attempt last Friday to share with some friends in the temple. The balance “ta pao” by a lady friend. Hehe…

Hi Joanne, thanks.

MRC, I'm so regret to buy the set. The rolling mat is too small, and shoyu is too salty. So, I would not recommend to buy it.
